Overlapping Product No Problem for MDX
The Challenge
Foreign body detection, such as stones or glass that are commonly picked up during fresh lettuce or green harvesting, can be difficult to locate by single energy x-ray detection due to green stems, leaf sizes or various densities of the lettuce. Greens stems are denser than the rest of the leaf and the density variance caused by stems and leaves overlapping makes it difficult for traditional x-ray systems to identify contaminants. In addition to this, salad kits are comprised of several toppings bundled together which can also be hard to check given the density variation of each bag. Ensuring one salad bag kit has accurate component count and is free of contaminants is nearly impossible for traditional x-ray inspection equipment.
The Solution
With the use of SimulTask PRO imaging software, the Eagle™ Pack 430 PRO with Material Discrimination X-ray technology (MDX) is capable of simultaneous food contaminant detection and component count with accurate results. Dual energy technology overcomes busy output images from traditional single energy x-ray inspection systems by examining the chemical composition or atomic number to determine if an object other than lettuce is present. The same form of technology can also be used to check for missing pouches and toppings or contaminants within the pouches, as well as measure accurate total package weight. Eagle offers a complete solution for food quality control, making it the right choice for salad kit manufacturers.
